As taken directly from the Thai Healing Alliance website, Thai Healing Alliance International (THAI) is a non-partisan network of professionals engaged in the study and practice of nuad boran, also known as traditional Thai massage. THAI endorses students, Registered Thai Therapists, teachers and schools around the world that follow basic guidelines of study and practice. Lists of registered therapists, teachers and approved courses are available to the general public, and application forms may be easily downloaded from this web site.
It is good to have a governing factor over Thai Bodywork. As with all professions, it is important in my opinion for consumers to be aware of the quality of work that they are receiving. Minnesota is a state where bodyworkers are not required to be nationallly certified and thus, truly anyone can say that they are qualified at a skill. It is important for you as a consumer to know the quality of work you are receiving. In receiving Thai bodywork, look for members of THAI and in regular massage work, look for therapists with licenses and therapists that either belong to AMTA or ABMP.

And I disagree with the comments from the person who left the last post. This particular person is a is not a member of THAI because he apparently doesn't meet the study and practice qualifications for Instructor membership. It's un-Buddhist of him that he would badmouth an international organization dedicated to the advancement and education of traditional Thai massage while at the same time pushing his own agenda and directing people to his own web site.
Like Margaret and her teacher, I am also a member of THAI, and I can asure you the schools and teachers associated with THAI are "quality Thai massage schools." That is why all the major schools in Thailand and others around the world have endorsed THAI. That is why schools in Thailand refer their students to THAI-approved practitioners and teachers.
Bad-mouthing an international organization ypou don't qualify to belong to, while trying to make money from someone else's blog seems somewhat sleazy and suspect, don't you think, readers ? THAI-approved practitioners and teachers are a safe bet.
While I am sure there are many qualified Thai practitioners who may not choose to belong to various memberships for one reason or another, it seems extremely unhip to blatantly bash the best one out there which supports the advancement of quality Thai practitioners only to funnel people to their own website. There's room enough for all of us "Thai Institute" - lighten up!
THAI is about inclusiveness and community in maintaining the authenticity of this ancient healing modality, while also helping to direct consumersto practitioners in their areas. It's as simple as that. They do not claim to be a regulating body, nor try to act as one. Consumers still need to inquire about training and ask for references if that is something they require to make an apoointment.
To dispel a myth also created by "Thai Institute" Dude, as a member of THAI, my training hours were accepted even from non-member schools ( I now have over 300 hours) so one is not limited to studying with only THAI member schools. That's just not true.
I also attended their 2007 North American conference, which was incredible. There were about 40 practitioners there from the U.S., Canada, Germany, Sweden, Thailand. The teachers and workshops were advanced practice techniques- simply top notch. Any practitioner who can break away for a long weekend should absolutely attend the next one! Their newsletter is also super informative about the Thai healing arts and the website is LOADED with info in the THAI archives.
I highly recommend that all Thai practitoners take a peek at their website. There is a list of all the upcoming trainings all over the world. And if you want to study with schools or teachers that are not in their membership, just make sure you read the guidelines and understand how to mix and match for each membership level!
